Mother Justina and Mother Barbara
May 2nd through May 30th 2025
Mother Justina’s artwork often portrays the everyday lives of the Greek Orthodox nuns who live within the Convent of St. Elizabeth in Etna, California. Her fascinating work offers a glimpse into their seldom seen religious practices. She works in many different media including watercolor, pastels and graphite. Mother Justina is also the convent’s head iconographer. The artwork the nuns do in recreating traditional Byzantine iconography is sold all over the world. Mother Justina has been a teacher and inspiration to the other members of the convent.
While Mother Barbara also recreates traditional Byzantine artwork, the focus in her contemporary work are often animals. She is particularly gifted in depicting all types of birds, both photorealistic and fantastical. She works in colored pencils, watercolor and gouache.
This exhibition is Mother Justina’s MFA Thesis for Savanna College of Art and Design.
